My brother is an organic farmer here in the southwestern United States. He is part of a group of farmers who work through a fruit broker that helps the farmers sell their produce. One would think that working the earth and being kind of low key would be insulation against having problems with computers or any associated technology. Boy was I wrong. The fruit broker was a mere pawn in a line of other middlemen whose exchange server had major problems which affected the whole bunch. Exchange recovery people were called in and the problem was fixed. It did take a couple of days; however those two days were hard on everyone.

Are you willing to put forth the needed effort initially to get your business on solid footing? Are you willing to take on the bad days along with the good days? If your hobby were to become your main source of income, will you still love doing it? Give thought to the time you are willing to spend: A new business is like a small child; it demands complete attention. Are you willing to do that? I came home yesterday and my wife waived a letter in my face. “Look at this,” she exclaimed. “The Arnolds are retiring early.”

The insinuation was clear. We’re NOT retiring early, and the Arnolds are. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m only 48 years old, and I’m not even close to being ready to retire. But I am ready to THINK about retirement, and as a small business owner, I still have a lot to do to prepare.

I went through so many different ideas of what I thought I would like to do as my career in life. I wanted to be a photographer or an architect, when I was a kid.
