Assessing the Stocks and Establishing Quotas in Alaskan Fisheries
When the livelihood of a state depends on the environment, there is even greater reason to respect the nature we have been given. Alaska has been at the forefront of state-sponsored conservation for decades. Its biggest industry — the excellent seafood harvested off its icy waters — is being protected by a number of agencies. To set a limit of fish caught on any given year, a careful review is made of fisheries resources, the climate and the health of each seafood species. By figuring out the numbers in terms of Total Allowable Catch, escapement and by-catch, the future of the fisheries can be assured.
