Enlarged Prostate Treatment - The Open Prostatectomy
For many men drug treatment and minimally invasive surgery is either not successful or is not considered an appropriate form of enlarged prostate treatment and it is then a question of turning to surgery, including the open prostatectomy. This procedure, which is carried out under general anesthetic, involves the removal of the inner core of the prostate gland by open surgery through an incision made in the lower abdomen. The procedure involves a stay in hospital of several days and the use of a catheter at home for a while during recovery, which can be expected to take about a month to six weeks. Patients normally experience a moderate degree of discomfort or pain during recovery and about one in twenty patients will subsequently experience incontinence.
