Skeletal Muscle

Skeletal muscles (Striped, Striated, Somatic, or Voluntary muscles): These muscles are most abundant, and found attached to skeleton. The actions of this type of muscle are under the voluntary control hence it is also called as voluntary muscle. They exhibit cross-striations under microscope, hence named as striated muscle also. The transverse striations of the striated muscle are due to presence of alternate dark and light bands. These bands are due to two different protein molecules called as actin and myosin present in each muscle fibre. These are responsible for the contraction of the muscle. The cytoplasm contains more than one nucleus. They are pushed at the periphery. A single motor neuron together with the muscle fibres supplied by it is called as a motor unit. Examples: Muscles of limbs and body wall. medical coding training teaches you all these in detail.
